Slug Juice

My garden is a slug party, and there's not much I can do about it.

Today I was pulling weeds and the slugs were everywhere. I needed a spot to deposit them because I'm no good at killing them directly through squishy violence. I prefer a less direct method of death. Today I choose drowning because one of the girls left a cup o' water right next to me.

I dropped slug after slug into the glass.

Plop.

Plop.

Plop.

The girls would come over and look.

"Eewww. Disgusting. Mom that's gross."

Then daddy brought Brick out into the yard.

"What is that?" I hear dh say, grabbing the slug juice away from Baby Brick's lips.

Yes. That's right.

He was drinking slug juice.

I think this may just be the most disgusting moment of my entire life.
And that's saying a lot.

You can use a garlic spray (available at many nurseries, non-toxic for pets and children) to control slugs.

When we lived in North Carolina, we had many slugs that liked to squeeze in under our front door. It was gross. I used to live in fear that my baby would slurp one up.

I would like to point out that the entire family was in the front yard when I came home. My dear wife was proud of the work she had done in the flower bed and told me that I needed to go look. We went together and admired her hard work. It was at that point that we turned around and noticed Slug Tea.

I just wanted to clarify that it was not neglegence on my belaf that led to our little tea drinker. Nor was it my wifes. (other than a glass of water with slugs on the sidewalk for anyone to drink) But it was really about timing and a thirsty boy. The good news is that Slugs are low in Sodium.

Ha! The funny thing is, when we were slug-infested in N.C., someone told us to put a line of table salt in front of our door to deter them. I don't remember if we tried it though.

Putting out a dish of beer is a great way to kill slugs -- the little alcoholic critters just dive right in and drown themselves. No need to even help them along.

Of course I can just imagine the next slug post -- Baby Brick & slug-beer . . .

    N.O.

I've never tried garlic, but I have tried beer, and maybe I have Mormon slugs because they never fell for it.
